Not only are there some good introductory books to purchase on establishing
your archives, there are also lots of websites with free resources you can use
and tailor to your needs.
Books of Interest:
Gregory S. Hunter, Developing and Maintaining
Practical Archives: A How-to-do-it Manual (Neal-Schuman, 1997).
- Institutions on the project should attempt to get
this book.
Elizabeth Yakel, Starting an Archives (Rowman
and Littlefield, 1994).
- All institutions participating in the project should
attempt to have a look at this, even if you get it through InterLibrary Loan
(ILL).
Archival Fundamentals Series II.
- This is a series of basic guides published by the Society
of American Archivists. Of particular interest to the BAP participants might
be the Glossary and Guides on Arrangement and Description of Archives, though
also possibly the Management of Archives volume. These can be ordered through
the SAA publications Catalog (link below)
Most of these books can be purchased through
Amazon. Otherwise, try the Society of American Archivists
(SAA) web site. If a
resource is expensive and you are unsure that you want it, try to acquire it
through Inter Library Loan and look at it first.
